In January 1940, Joseph A. Marino signed a contract to build a house on Soundview Avenue, in Norwalk, for the Grenede family. This was the beginning of Joseph A. Marino Contractors, Inc.

Joseph educated himself by studying books on framing and estimating and by long days working as a carpenter for local firms, including working on the Palace Theater in Norwalk. After Joseph completed the eighth grade at Benjamin Franklin Middle School, he worked with his father for Norwalk’s McMahon family.

The company went on to build some of the finest homes in the area, concentrating on custom contract building, which it still does today. One of their noteworthy contracts was the residence of musician Dave Brubeck of Wilton.

In 1977, his son Lewis, a civil engineering graduate of the University of Connecticut and a Professional Engineer, joined Joseph. Lew was a project engineer for the E. and F. Construction Company for 5 years in the 1960’s. For the 12 years prior to joining his father in the family business, Lew worked for the F.D. Rich Company. His experience is project manager and Vice President of Construction Operations, having handled the reins for some of the major office buildings in Stamford. Lew managed the construction of many housing projects from Key West, Florida to California, to Rhode Island and Puerto Rico.

In the 1980’s, developers produced the majority of new homes in our area. During this time, the Joseph A. Marino Contractors, Inc., maintaining the desire to continue custom building, made a smooth transition into addition and renovation projects of all sizes, as well as commercial projects.

Douglas Marino joined his father and grandfather in 1987. Doug attended C.W. Post College and graduated from Norwalk State Technical College with an Associates Degree in Construction Technology.

In 1989, the company put up its own building, “Joseph A. Marino Square” at 295 Main Avenue in Norwalk, currently owned by Marino Properties of Wilton. The project was a pivotal one used by planning commission experts in demonstrating the need for new zoning classification. Sadly, Joseph passed away one week prior to the grand opening The World of Beverages store, the major retail tenant of Joseph A. Marino Square, which has office and residential uses as well. The company has since completed two large apartment complexes, also currently owned by Marino Properties.

In 2000, Lewis retired. Doug Marino, having learned all areas of the residential construction business in his thirteen years since joining the company, purchased the business and now operates as owner and master carpenter of Joseph A. Marino Contractors, Inc.

The company now specializes in residential construction ranging from general home repair to extensive renovations and additions. Using only conscientious, licensed subcontractors, Joseph A. Marino Contractors, Inc provides high quality workmanship and project management from the excavation phase to finish painting.
